Whew! Last week’s International Pathfinder Camporee was as thrilling and dizzying as riding a bucking bull or horse—just like those Wyoming cowboys we saw at the Gillette rodeo.
With more than 60,000 young people from over 100 countries gathering at the Cam-Plex Facilities in Gillette, Wyoming, this event was a sight to behold. Over the course of six days, Pathfinders—members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s co-ed, scout-like youth organization—transformed the grounds into a bustling tent and RV city, marking the Ninth International Pathfinder Camporee with the theme: “Believe the Promise.”
Storms and the Show: A Rollercoaster Start
Our adventure began with a fierce storm on the first night that immediately tested our resolve. The organizers cancelled the evening program, leaving everyone scrambling for cover as campsites and supplies were flooded and torn apart. It was a chaotic scene, yet amid the turbulence, we found solace in the fact that no one was hurt. Thanks to the foresight of the stage and broadcast teams, the airwaves still buzzed with prerecorded content, keeping the spirit of the Camporee alive.
Just when we thought the night would end on a sombre note, a stunning double rainbow stretched across the sky—a vivid reminder that God was watching over us. The kind aid from the citizens of Gillette in the aftermath was yet another testament to His presence. In that moment, we were reminded of the Camporee’s theme: “Believe the Promise.”
The Show Must Go On
As we moved into night two, the weather continued to test us. However, the resilience of the Pathfinders shone through. We were treated to a live Act I of the play, which examined the life of Moses, a breathtaking drum corps performance, and an inspiring praise band that braved the elements until the rain forced an early end. Despite the disruptions, the energy and enthusiasm never waned.
By the third day, the skies cleared, and we fully immersed ourselves in the Camporee experience. Bundled up against the chilly wind, thousands of Pathfinders gathered at the main stage to enjoy the whimsical banter of ventriloquist Ryan Bomgardner and Ollie the Ostrich, and the fiery sermonettes from Pastor Damian Chandler. His message of God’s unstoppable love resonated deeply, especially after witnessing Acts 2 and 3 of the play, where Moses received some dramatic beard makeovers!
Adjusting Plans: A Lesson in Trust
Out of an abundance of caution, the Camporee organizers made the tough decision to conclude the program on Friday night, a day early, due to the forecast of more severe storms on Saturday. It was a wise decision, emphasizing that the safety of the Pathfinders was paramount.
This Camporee was certainly challenging, yet it was in these challenges that the hand of God became most evident. As leaders, we often try to control every aspect of an event to minimize risks, avoid mistakes, and ensure everything runs smoothly. However, this Camporee served as a humbling reminder that we cannot control everything. Our plans were upended by the storms, but in those moments of uncertainty, we learned to trust that God had a plan for us—one that was far greater than anything we could have devised.
Lessons Learned: Trust and Resilience
Storms are a part of life, just as they were a part of this Camporee. But it is in the midst of these storms that we truly learn to trust in God’s plan. The Pathfinders from the Cayman Islands Conference embodied this trust. Despite the adverse conditions, they remained cheerful and grateful to be part of the “Believe the Promise” Camporee.
I am especially thankful that God was present in the hearts and minds of the Pathfinders, particularly those who surrendered their lives completely to Jesus. He was there in the rain that provided much-needed relief to the drought-stricken areas of Gillette, and in the decision-making of the organizers who prioritized safety above all else. And He was there when the most beautiful rainbow appeared, reinforcing one of His eternal promises.
Moving Forward with Faith
The “Believe the Promise” Camporee was more than just an event—it was a lesson in faith, resilience, and the importance of trusting God in all circumstances. As we move forward, I encourage all Pathfinders to reflect on their experiences at the Camporee through the lens of faith. Let these experiences be a reminder that no matter the trials we face, God’s promises remain steadfast.
May the memories of this Camporee be filled with sunshine, even amidst the storms. And as we look ahead to Gillette 2029, let us resolve to “Stand Strong” like Elijah, ready to face whatever challenges come our way.
