Heroes of Faith: Joseph

We have been in Hebrews 11, talking about heroes in the Hall of Faith, and Joseph is in this list. Hebrews 11:22 mentions this: “By faith, Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel and gave instructions concerning his bones.”

Genesis 50:24 and 25 give us these instructions: And Joseph said to his brethren, “I’m dying, but God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”

Joseph recognized that Egypt was not his final destination. He knew God was preparing a better place for him. So, he said, “When God visits, make sure not even my bones are left behind.”

And just like Joseph and the Heroes of Faith, they were all looking for a better country, a Heavenly one. In John 14:3, Jesus reminds us that he has gone to prepare a place for us and that he will come again so that where he is, we can be there also.

Even if we die, just like Joseph and many others have in the past, but we have accepted Christ as our Savior, we still have hope because Jesus is the resurrection and the life. I’m looking forward to that new Heaven and new Earth where there are no more tears, no more death, sorrow, crying, and no more pain.

There will be no more COVID, cancer, and sickness, and no more evil and no more suffering. What a day that will be! God will surely visit us very soon. But the question is, are you ready to meet him? And just like Joseph, make sure your bones don’t get left behind.

Prayer: Father, thank you so much for your promises. Thank you that you will surely visit us very soon. Help us to be ready when Jesus comes. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
