God is Love – The Munches

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8 (NIV)”

Much is said of love. Some say it’s blind and foolish while others say it’s lovely and exhilarating. Some say love is the feeling you feel when you feel you are feeling a feeling you feel you’ve never felt before. Others have said it’s an intense, sustained unselfish affection.  Humans and love seem to be inextricably connected. We love each other, animals, things, places, fragrances, ideas and even space.

Robert A. Heinlein, in the book “Stranger in a Strange Land” wrote, “Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” Nicholas Sparks in “A Walk to Remember” postulated that “Love is like the wind, you can’t see it; however, you can feel it.” St. John in the Holy Bible, said “God is Love” Love is who He is and his love, is seen best and felt in what He does, how He does it and why He does it. God is Love!

Love motivates us to strive for excellence and propels us to the proverbial “more beyond”. Remarkable acts have been proposed in the name of love. One would cross the ocean and another catch a grenade. But in December 1936, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions became to first British monarch to abdicated the throne. His reason; to marry Wallis Simpson, the woman he loved. The Kings’ proposal to Wallis caused a political, constitutional and religious crisis because she was far from the ideal to be queen.

The reality is apparent, like Wallis Simpson, we are far from ideal, but God is love, and He abdicated the throne in glory to allow the objects of His love to spend eternity with Him. So, the next time you feel unloved and undesirable, remember God is Love.

Prayer: Lord, help us to respond appropriately to your love, by remembering love is who you are and what you do.
