Forgiving As You Have Been Forgiven – The Munches

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Colossians 3:13 (KJV)

Have you been struggling with forgiving others as God has forgiven you? Jesus, the Christ, is known for having spoken many parables; figurative stories that teach a moral or spiritual lesson. Many years ago, Jesus told a parable of a wealthy king who was reconciling his accounts, and to his surprise, one of his servants owed him an enormous debt. He owed 10,000 talents. In our time, we are used to currencies such as the dollar, naira, pound, peso, and rand. One talent is approximately $348,000USD in our time, and this was equivalent to 20 years earnings at an average rate of $6USD per hour. In short, the servant owed USD$3.48B and would have to save every cent of his revenues for 200,000 years, to repay the king. A massive debt indeed!

The king decided that to recover the debt; he would have the man, his wife and all his children sold since they had no assets to liquidate. Recognizing his plight, the servant fell on his knees and begged the king to be merciful unto him and give him time to repay the debt. As impossible as it was, he was willing to accept responsibility and work to compensate. Seeing his commitment, the king had compassion upon him and wrote off the entire debt. He left the presence of the king rejoicing. Talk about a turn of fate.

This same servant, not long after he found a fellow servant who owed him 100 denarii; which is $5,760. USD or four months’ salary. The forgiven servant caught him by the throat and held him against a wall demanding that he pay what he owed. His fellow servant begged for mercy and asked for time to repay. But instead of mercy the servant filed legal charges against him and had him imprisoned.

He had been forgiven $3.48B or 200,000 years of income by the king and could not forgive his fellow servant $5,760 or 4months of income. The Bible says in Colossians 3:13 “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Forgave, not because the person deserves it, but because God has forgiven you, and instructed you to do likewise.

Prayer: Lord, help us to forgive others in light of the forgiveness we have already received from you. Amen.
