Northern Caribbean University (NCU), a Seventh-day Adventist Jamaican institution with over a century of educational excellence, made significant strides in strengthening its presence in the Cayman Islands through an intensive week-long engagement initiative dubbed “NCU Touchdown: Cayman Islands.”
The initiative, which ran from January 22-26, 2025, was a part of NCU’s attempt to add to the tertiary educational opportunities and community development of the Cayman Islands. Led by International Recruitment Officer Tara Robinson and Dr. Damion Mitchell, Assistant Provost & Chair of Computer & Information Sciences, the program encompassed educational outreach, corporate partnerships, and community engagement.
The university’s comprehensive approach included participation in the Cayman Academy Science & Math Symposium, visiting local high schools, and engaging with corporate leaders to align educational programs with workforce needs. “Be the STEM”, said Dr. Mitchell in a presentation to Cayman Academy students. “Strive for excellence, think innovatively, embrace challenge and Make a difference.”
A highlight of the program was the extensive church community outreach held on January 25, where NCU representatives visited multiple congregations across the Cayman Islands, including Bodden Town, George Town, and Kings. Dr. Mitchell delivered a special address at the Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist church, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to Christian education and academic excellence.
The initiative also focused on strengthening ties with NCU alumni in the Cayman Islands through an evening ‘Link-Up’ event at Cayman Academy. This networking opportunity served to celebrate the university’s legacy while building future partnerships that benefit both the NCU and Cayman communities.
NCU’s presence in the Cayman Islands represents a significant opportunity for local students to access quality higher education with a Christian foundation. The university’s proactive engagement with local high schools, religious institutions, and corporate entities demonstrates its commitment to becoming a key educational partner for the Cayman Islands community.
